Discipline
Our rules are the Eagle Way. The Eagle Way is: Do the best you can, Do what is right, and Treat others as you want to be treated. If we follow those rules everything runs smoothly and we are happier. We work on being Bucket Fillers, not Bucket dippers.
It is my goal that students begin to be aware of their feelings and when they need to “calm down”. I have a large thermometer hung in the classroom. The thermometer has 6 sections, and is colored blue up to red. We talk about wanting to feel cool and blue. If a child is making choices or feeling not cool and blue I ask them (or they go on their own) and calm down. I have 4 exercises that they do to bring them back to 0. This is not a time out, but a chance to get their bodies under control. I feel this is a lifelong lesson.
My classroom is a safe environment for students to take risks and learn in. If a child is struggling to gain control and our calm down exercises are not working, I will 1st give a timeout so they are removed from the situation. In the timeout they will fill out a paper with their poor choice and what a better choice would have been (A copy will be sent home). If the behavior continues we will call home. (Your child will call you to explain (or you will receive a note or phone call from me) Together we can have a wonderful, happy learning experience!
